PAOK had to overcome several challenges, but continued the impressive tradition it has established in Agrinio. The “Double-Headed Eagle of the North” defeated Panetolikos 3-1 in the 5th matchday of the Stoiximan Super League, reaching 12 points and extending a streak that has lasted for more than 13 years.
With goals from Taha Ali and Ndiaye, the Thessaloniki side laid the groundwork for yet another “away win” in the first half. Panetolikos pulled one back after the break through Esteban and pressed hard, while PAOK saw Taha Ali, Pavlenka, and Elustondo leave the field with injuries. Despite these setbacks, the visitors held on and scored a third goal, leaving Agrinio with a particularly important victory.
The 3-1 win now brings PAOK’s streak of consecutive away wins over Panetolikos in league play to 13. If we include the victory in the Greek Cup during the 2016–17 season, the total rises to 14 consecutive wins in Agrinio across all competitions. The last time PAOK did not leave Agrinio with a win was on August 24, 2013, when Panetolikos prevailed 2-0.
With this latest victory, PAOK has further solidified the impressive record it has built in Agrinio. In 17 league matches as the visiting team against Panetolikos, the “Double-Headed Eagle” now boasts 15 wins, while Panetolikos has managed just one victory and one draw. This season’s 3-1 victory adds to a string of results that confirms the “Black-and-Whites’” absolute dominance at this venue in recent years.
The evening was also particularly significant for Giannis Michailidis, who reached his 100th appearance in a PAOK jersey in the Super League. The Greek defender made his league debut on June 28, 2020, in a 2-0 away victory over Aris in the playoffs, and has now reached a significant personal milestone with the “Double-Headed Eagle.”
