Omonia President Stavros Papastavrou spoke to RIK’s camera ahead of the team’s opener in the Europa League group stage against Celta.
Here’s what he said in detail
On the match: “We want to win. We know it’s difficult, but we believe in our potential, and with a little luck, I hope we’ll pull it off.”
What do you expect from the team? “The players and the coaching staff believe in victory. We’ve gotten used to playing in Europe in recent years, and every year we want to do even better.”
You gave it your all for the Champions League: “We wanted to advance in the Champions League, but then the red cards came—bad luck—we’ll try again next season.”
Where do you want to see Omonia in the next five years? “It’s a general answer, but we want to keep growing and finish higher every year. That’s what we want, and that’s what we’ll strive for.”
On Dimitris Grigoris’s resignation from the Referees’ Committee: “It was his own decision. He was trying to make changes to this committee—changes that we all want to see. The level of Cypriot soccer has risen; teams are investing a lot of money, so it’s time to make the necessary changes in Cypriot refereeing as well. The people at the CFF—the president, Mr. Vakis—must make a decision to help Cypriot soccer.”
Will you try to change his mind? “Everyone at the CFF needs to take responsibility. I don’t disagree that this committee is just for show, and since he doesn’t see any progress, I don’t expect him to return.”
