Ronald Koeman is no longer the coach of the Dutch national team, as he submitted his resignation just a few hours after the team’s painful elimination in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, at the hands of Morocco in a penalty shootout.

The Netherlands took the lead, but failed to “seal” their advancement, as Morocco equalized and ultimately prevailed in the penalty shootout, knocking the “Oranje” out of the tournament.
Koeman’s decision came amid intense pressure, as he was already facing criticism for his defensive tactics and his five-man backline. Despite the support he had enjoyed in the recent past, the disappointing result at the World Cup appears to have been the final turning point.
