Carlos Queiroz's tenure as Ghana's national team coach lasted five months.
The Portuguese coach submitted his resignation following the “Black Stars’” consecutive losses in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers—a 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast and a 4-2 loss to The Gambia.
The 73-year-old coach reached an agreement with the country’s soccer federation last April, to lead the national team to the World Cup finals.
There, Ghana advanced past the group stage thanks to a single victory over Panama, but in the Round of 32, they lost 1-0 to Colombia and were eliminated. The veteran coach’s contract expired after the World Cup, but the federation decided on September 2 to retain him as national team coach for the upcoming matches.
“It wasn’t an easy decision, but both sides agreed that, under the current circumstances, terminating our professional collaboration was the most appropriate choice, as the interests of Ghana, the ‘Black Stars,’ and Ghanaian soccer took precedence over any other factor.
“The necessary conditions were not met, and our recent results contributed to the decision to end this venture,” said Keiros, who is leaving with a record of just one win in seven matches.
