Regarding the lifting of Anorthosis’s penalties by the CFF Appeals Court, the press representative for “Kyriá,” Charalambos Parpetas, in statements he made to SPOR FM 95.
He emphasized that the punishment was not justified based on the facts of the case and that, ultimately, the team was vindicated, as no dangerous objects were thrown onto the field.
In detail:
On the Court of Appeals’ decision: “We welcome the unanimous decision of the Court of Appeals, which did what was obvious to us by overturning an erroneous ruling against Anorthosis. From the outset, we maintained that the penalty was not justified in light of the facts of the case. The unanimous decision constitutes a clear and substantial vindication of Anorthosis.”
Regarding the details of the appeal: “Anorthosis argued what actually happened—namely, that no dangerous objects were thrown onto the field. We argued this point using every legal tool at our legal team’s disposal. Once the reasoning behind the Court of Appeals’ unanimous decision is published, it will explain in detail exactly what happened.”
So, was the referral incorrect? “Clearly.”
Regarding the written statement by the Judicial Committee: “It is our duty to respond to the public written statement by the chairman of the Judicial Committee, Mr. Yiannis Antoniadis, just a few hours before the Court of Appeals session and the hearing of cases concerning decisions made by the very committee of which he is chairman. Regardless of intent, we believe that such statements—given his position and, above all, the timing of their release—require careful consideration. All of us who serve Cypriot soccer have a responsibility to safeguard the credibility of its institutions, and especially on such sensitive issues, there must be no room for ambiguity, misinterpretation, or suspicions of undue influence. This is unprecedented.”
A message to the public: “What I want to say to our community is that the administration will continue to seriously defend our interests using every legal means at our disposal. When our interests are at stake, we will be there and will provide the necessary responses. You’ll recall that after the Executive Committee’s decision, we were adamant and confident that we would be vindicated. Following this development, we are confident that our fans will fill our stadium on Sunday for the match against Paphos.”
On the game against Paphos: “It’s our team’s second home game of the season. We’re facing a tough opponent whom we respect, and we’ll try, as always, to be competitive. The coach had the opportunity to work with the players during the break with the goal of earning more points going forward.”
On match-day matters: “Karlström followed a conservative training regimen. He had some discomfort, and his fitness will be assessed once he returns to training. There’s a good chance he’ll be available. Setin suffered a biceps muscle injury, and the extent of the problem will become clear in the coming days. Van Nistelrooy is doing well, and Bergström is following a rehabilitation program.”
Regarding the procedures to lift the embargo: “Although we don’t want to talk about the issue often because it’s difficult and the odds aren’t in our favor, we have confirmed, however, that the company’s president was in Zurich for a few days, holding important meetings as part of this ongoing effort aimed at overturning the decision. “We will make every possible effort, and if there are any substantial developments, we will keep the public informed.”
