Iconic coach Soulias Markopoulos has died at the age of 77, plunging Greek basketball into mourning. His passing leaves a huge void in the sport he faithfully served for more than four decades.
Soulis Markopoulos had a career both as a basketball player and as a coach. From 1967 to 1972, he played for the Olympos 40 Ekklisies team, and he continued with Dimokritos until 1978, when he retired from the court. He immediately began his coaching career with the same team, followed in succession by Heraklis, PAOK (both as an assistant and head coach), Aris, Makedonikos, AEK, and Marousi.
The highlight of his long career came in 1994, when he led PAOK to victory in the European Korać Cup, and he also holds a historic record in the history of the Greek League, as he is the coach with the most total appearances on the bench, having surpassed 700 games. At the same time, he ranks among the top three coaches with the most wins, trailing only Yiannis Ioannidis and Zeljko Obradovic.
