Miltos Tentoglou advanced to the final of the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.
The top high jumper got off to a slow start with a jump of 7.78 meters on his first attempt, landing well behind the takeoff board, but on his second attempt he reached 8.26 meters (with a tailwind of 1.2) surpassing the qualifying standard of 8.15 m.
This was also the best performance up to that point among the participants in the two qualifying heats. Tentoglou will now compete for a medal in the final, which will take place on Tuesday evening (10:16 p.m. Greek time).
It should be noted that his main rival, Italy’s Matteo Furlan, was injured upon landing his first jump and was wheeled off the field in a stretcher, missing out on a spot in the final!
Nikos Stamatonikolos also failed to advance to the final, with a first jump of 7.49 m, a second of 7.55 m, and a third that was ruled invalid.
