George Gillett, former co-owner of Liverpool, has died at the age of 87. The American businessman had acquired a 50% stake in the English club in 2007, along with his business partner Tom Hicks, taking control of the team from David Moores.

Gillett and Hicks’ tenure at the helm of Liverpool proved particularly turbulent, with the two owners facing intense backlash from fans and significant financial difficulties. In 2010, they were ultimately forced to sell the club to Fenway Sports Group amid concerns about the team’s financial future.

The relationship between the two businessmen had also deteriorated significantly. Gillett had publicly stated in 2008 that their partnership had become unworkable, while expressing his intention to sell his stake. At that time, there had also been discussions with Dubai International Capital regarding its potential investment in Liverpool, though no agreement was ultimately reached.

Gillett was also active in the world of hockey, having owned the Montreal Canadiens from 2001 to 2009. The news of his death was announced by the team’s owner and president, Jeff Molson, who expressed his condolences to his family and highlighted Gillett’s contributions to the club and the Montreal community.
