Hertha held on in the nail-biting thriller in Vienna, defeating Rapid 4-3 in a penalty shootout and celebrating a remarkable advancement to the League Phase of the Conference League, following a 2-2 draw in regulation and overtime.
The Austrians took the lead in the 34th minute through Kara, but Hearts didn’t falter. The Scots responded in the 79th minute, when Kabore equalized and sent the match into extra time.
That’s when the game became even more intense. Hearts completed the comeback in the 100th minute with a goal by Miller and were on the verge of advancing, but Rapid hadn’t said their last word. In the 119th minute, Tsvetkovic equalized to make it 2-2, sending the two teams to a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Hearts proved to be the cooler team and prevailed 4–3 after Tilio missed the final penalty kick, and so the Scots returned to the Conference League after the 2022–23 season.
