Achille Polonara emerged victorious in his battle with leukemia, even though he had to give up his basketball career.
“It was devastating. But it’s a choice I’ve come to terms with,” said the former Italian international power forward, speaking at a sports conference.
“There are certainly some things I experience differently now. Now, perhaps even a simple walk with my kids—I appreciate it much more than before, when I took everything for granted,” he said, adding that the greatest achievement of his life isn’t in basketball, but “…that I became a father.”
As for the most difficult moment of his illness? “It was the period after the coma. Even though things were improving, I had a kind of psychological aversion to food and drink. It was a very difficult time,” he said.
Finally, he was asked about his relationship with God. “Honestly, I’ve always been a very religious person, but after everything that happened to me, I’m less so, even though I realize it’s a miracle that I’m still here.”
