Portugal: Ronaldo Faces Severe Punishment Following His Departure

What are the penalties he faces?
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Cristiano Ronaldo faces a possible suspension of one to six months following his decision to withdraw from the Portuguese national team. The 41-year-old captain’s departure was confirmed by both himself and the Portuguese Football Federation, and the matter has now taken on a disciplinary dimension.

According to the FPF’s Disciplinary Regulations, a player who has been duly called up to the national team and who withdraws or is unjustifiably absent from training, a match, or any other activity related to representing Portugal, may be punished with a suspension of one to six months. Professional soccer players are also subject to a fine ranging from approximately 500 to 1,000 euros.

The same regulation also stipulates that absence or withdrawal may result in the player’s automatic temporary suspension until the case is reviewed. This means that in the coming days, it is expected to become clear how Ronaldo’s decision will be handled disciplinarily and whether there will be further consequences.

This development comes after days of tension surrounding the Portugal captain. Ronaldo had started in the 1-0 victory over Wales in the opener of Group 4 of League A of the Nations League, but in the next match against Norway in Oslo, he remained on the bench for the entire 90 minutes.

After the 2-1 victory over Norway, the Portuguese forward walked off to the locker room visibly displeased and did not join his teammates in greeting the fans. A few days later, he announced his departure from the squad, while hinting that he would publicly explain the reasons for his decision when he felt the time was right.
