Yiannis Alafouzos is the new president of the Super League.
The meeting (via teleconference) to elect a new president took an unexpected turn: Vangelis Marinakis changed his stance; whereas yesterday he had dismissed Makis Gagatsis’s proposal—for a one-year term for Yiannis Alafouzos and one for Vangelis MaMarinakis, faced with a 7-7 deadlock in the second round of voting, ultimately backtracked today and accepted the proposal.
This happened in the face of Yiannis Alafouzos’s looming victory, as the powerful figure at Panathinaikos FC was expected to be elected 8-7, securing the Hellenic Football Federation’s (EPO) vote as well, given that until just a few hours ago, the president of Olympiacos had been uncompromising.
Vangelis Marinakis, however, set as a… condition that he serve as president for the first year and Giannis Alafouzos for the second, a proposal that was not accepted by the president of Panathinaikos FC. Ultimately, after consultations, it was decided that Giannis Alafouzos would serve as president for the first year and Vangelis Marinakis for the second.
