If this was Roma’s first taste of this year’s Serie A, then the “Giallorossi” have every reason to aim high. The team from the Eternal City put on an impressive performance in their season opener, crushing Fiorentina 4-0, with Doniel Malen as the undisputed star of the show.
The Dutch forward scored a hat trick, with Paulo Dybala stealing a bit of the spotlight by setting up all three of his teammate’s goals!
Roma put on a display that was truly a joy to watch. A team shaped by Gasperini’s philosophy, with a back three, fullbacks pushing forward and actively participating in the play, and forwards exploiting every available space.
Malen gave Roma the lead in the 27th minute when he received the ball inside the box, controlled it superbly with the inside of his left foot, and with a cool finish beat De Gea to make it 1-0.
The Dutchman struck again in the 52nd minute, this time with a powerful left-footed shot from inside the box, sending the ball into the top corner and turning his team’s victory into a triumph.
Eight minutes later, he completed his hat trick. Dybala made an excellent individual run down the right, entered the box, shared the ball with his opponent, and at just the right moment passed to Malen, who tapped it into an empty net to make it 3-0.
Pizilli put the icing on the cake in the 86th minute. The young star showed great tenacity, beating Dragusin and then De Gea to “nibble” at the ball and send it into the net for the final 4-0.
Meanwhile, Konstantinos Kouliarakis also made his debut for Roma, entering the game in the 68th minute to replace Hermoso.
