Cristiano Ronaldo appeared emotional after Portugal’s comeback victory over Croatia and their advancement to the World Cup Round of 16.
The Portuguese captain initially focused on the emotional significance of the day, as the match took place on the anniversary of Diogo Jota’s death.
“It’s unbelievable. We knew about it before the game. It was a very special moment. We all talked about it together today—about life’s coincidences. It’s truly incredible. I was surprised because today’s circumstances meant so much to us. Not just because we won, but also because of the way we did it.
It was a tough game; we knew Croatia is a great team. In the first half, we controlled the game, but after their goal, we felt a little pressure. That’s just how soccer is. After my goal, which was called offside, the fans started to believe more. I asked the fans to support us, and after the penalty, things got better. We created chances, and I believe we deserved the win in the end,” said the 41-year-old superstar.
Ronaldo also spoke about Luka Modrić, whom he faced again in one of the Croatian’s last great performances:
“It was wonderful. I’ve played alongside Luka for many years, and we’re almost the same age. He’s a soccer legend and remains one because he continues to play at such a high level.
I’ve told him many times: ‘Luka, congratulations on everything you’ve achieved. I was really happy to see you again, and I wish you all the best for the rest of your career.” “It was truly special to face him again,” the Portuguese captain remarked.
