The Greek Boys’ National Team secured its first victory at the 2026 FIBA U16 EuroBasket, Division B, defeating Switzerland 64-44 in Geveli. This was a particularly important victory for our national team in its battle to remain in the division, in a game in which it gradually took control and comfortably secured the win.
The start was evenly matched, with both teams struggling on offense. The national team found solutions through Dimitriou, Christodoulou, and Sella and managed to take a small lead, closing out the first quarter ahead 12-10.
In the second quarter, our national team began to dictate the pace of the game. Solid defense created opportunities in transition, with Tryfonos scoring on consecutive plays and Fantousis making key plays. Cyprus initially pulled ahead 22–13 and then extended the lead to double digits, before Switzerland closed the gap, and the first half ended at 30–23.
The national team came out even stronger in the second half. Tryfonos scored twice from the 6.75-meter line, while Fandousis, Christodoulou, and Sellas continued to contribute on offense. At the same time, the defense significantly limited Switzerland, and the lead widened to 17 points, with the third quarter ending at 49-32.
With the game now firmly in their hands, the national team did not allow their opponent to mount a comeback. Tryfonos continued to score from long range, Fantousis provided additional scoring options near the basket, and Sofronis Savva sank two three-pointers. The lead grew to over 20 points, and our national team closed out the game 64–44, securing a victory of great importance in the standings.
The leading scorer was Nifonas Tryfonos with 16 points and four three-pointers, along with five rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Antonios Fantousis added 12 points, while Markos Dimitriou had eight points and ten rebounds. Savvas Savvas also played a crucial role, dishing out seven of the national team’s 22 total assists.
