What will European basketball look like in the coming years?
We’re expected to get an answer to this question in the coming days, as Euroleague officials are meeting today and tomorrow in Como, Italy. This meeting is being watched with great interest, as it will involve decisions of paramount importance for European basketball.
The major issue on the agenda is the – the NBA’s proposal to acquire a large portion of the organizing body’s shares in order to create a pan-European league under the NBA’s auspices.
Depending on the decision reached on this matter, the… secondary but equally important issues that Euroleague officials will be called upon to discuss and decide on include the format for the coming years, with an increase in the number of teams.
The owners of the League’s member teams will decide whether to expand the league to 24 teams, with new teams joining the competition, including Greek teams, with PAOK—as opposed to Aris—appearing—at this moment—to be the team that has already completed all the necessary procedures and stands a strong chance of qualifying.
Specifically, there are 13 teams vying for the four spots. In addition to the two Greek teams, Hapoel Jerusalem, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Red Star, Dubai, London Lions, Paris, Partizan, Roma, Napoli, Virtus Bologna, and Valencia have also submitted applications.
