Lionel Scaloni referred to the moments that will unfold during Lionel Messi’s final match with the Argentine national team in his remarks. He acknowledged that those moments will be difficult and certainly emotional, predicting that it will be hard for anyone watching to hold back tears.
“It’s his game; he deserves it, and I feel privileged to be a part of it, so that he can say goodbye the way he deserves, the way he wants. For the fans, it’s something special… for the soccer world, seeing him for the last time in the blue-and-white jersey will make it very hard not to cry that day, so it’s a privilege to be there,” Scaloni said, continuing:
“A player like him deserves it, and personally, I did my part because I want to be there for his farewell. I don’t know if I’ll be there later, but we all pushed for him to be able to play in this game. If he deserves a tribute, it should happen now, because later… the magic isn’t the same after some time has passed, and this is the moment for him to feel that affection,” he concluded, even going so far as to say that, in his opinion, Messi deserves the Ballon d’Or this season.
