An unexpected turn of events marked Fenerbahçe’s return to the Champions League, as shortly after the end of the match against Roma, Ismail Kartal announced his resignation.
Kartal appeared at the press conference and took everyone by surprise, announcing that he would not continue as Fenerbahçe’s head coach. The 65-year-old coach explained that he chose to step down at this point in order to give the club the opportunity to move forward immediately.

At the same time, he hinted that he would not be returning to the team, thus bringing his fourth stint as Fenerbahçe’s head coach to a close.
“I made this decision to clear the way for my club. I’m resigning now while it’s still early,” Kartal said, among other things, thanking his players for their cooperation.
The resignation comes at a significant moment for Fenerbahçe, which has just made its first appearance in the Champions League group stage in 18 years. Now, the club’s management must act immediately to select a new coach, while the team continues its matches in Turkey and Europe.
