Maria Sakkari made a very commendable gesture, demonstrating that she is not only a great athlete but also a great person. Greece’s top female tennis player donated 8,000 euros to a child battling leukemia.
The “Pediatric Playground” organization thanked Sakkaris for her gesture. “A week ago, we told you about Nikola, who is battling leukemia.About a child who is waiting for his test results to come back clear so that on September 7 he can undergo the transplant he’s been waiting for and get his chance at life. We also told you the hardest part: that Nikola’s dad, who was fighting his own battle with cancer, passed away. And yesterday, a whole world decided that this family would not be left alone. Today, we don’t know how to thank you. Because what happened in just a few hours was truly unimaginable. It was as if something magical had happened. As if no one who read this child’s story could just walk away. One person sent €5, another 10, 50, another 100, another 300, another 2,000! Behind every donation was a person who, upon seeing Nikola’s story, decided not to look the other way. And among all these people was someone whom many might consider to be in a world far removed from our own: Maria Sakkari. She, too, became a guardian angel for Nikola… She saw our post about the amount still needed. And immediately she donated 8,000€. Without fanfare. Without asking for anything in return. She didn’t let time slip by. She did what she could, right then and there, to help. Simply because she saw a child in need and decided to stand by his side. And that moves us perhaps more than anything else.”
The 31-year-old athlete, who did not seek to publicize this significant gesture, simply commented: “We don’t need to do much. It’s enough to do whatever we can, whenever we can, for people who need it.”
