The school competition in Cyprus between Anagennisi and the Hellenic College of Thessaloniki is in the spotlight, as one of the games with a rigged final result, to the benefit of the former, which is part of the broader scandal in Greek basketball.
SKAI brought to light the testimony of one of the referees for the game, who did exactly what he was asked to do. He ensured that Anagennisi won both games so that its student-athletes would earn points toward the national championships. According to his own account, after the games, he returned home and wept with remorse, and he revealed that he had provided these favors in order to secure a spot on the first-division roster.
“I delivered the results I was asked for as a referee, blatantly favoring Anagennisi in both matches, which went on to win the championship. The semifinal was against the Greek College of Thessaloniki. At the end of the final, there was a confrontation with a player from the opposing team who insulted me. After those games, I returned to the hotel in tears, overcome with remorse, and said, “That’s it.” “If I don’t get what I’m entitled to”—that is, to be selected for the First National Division—“I’ll quit.”
