Álvaro Morata is about to embark on a new and rather unexpected chapter in his career.
The 33-year-old forward has reached a verbal agreement with Leganés and is expected to play in Spain’s Second Division, in a move that, given his track record, certainly won’t go unnoticed. Morata has already traveled to undergo the necessary medical exams over the weekend, with the agreement involving his loan from Como.
This is undoubtedly a remarkable development for a player who, just two years ago, was at the top of European soccer with the Spanish national team.
At Euro 2024, Morata was a starter and captain of La Roja on their journey to winning the trophy, lifting the European Championship trophy as captain after the victory over England in the Berlin final.
Now, at 33, he is set to take a significant step down a division, essentially seeking a fresh start in his career. Leganés is the next stop for a forward who has delivered outstanding performances for Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Juventus, and Chelsea, as well as 37 goals for the Spanish national team.
The decision to join Spain’s second division is certainly the most surprising aspect. For him, however, the move to Leganés may be an opportunity to reclaim a regular role, regain his competitive rhythm and the confidence he needs, in an effort to revitalize his career in a familiar soccer environment.
A new chapter, then, for Morata. This time, not in the major European leagues, but in his home country’s second division.
