Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund will face off in the German Super Cup for the first domestic trophy of the new season (August 22 – 9:30 p.m.), with Niko Kovac now having the opportunity to gauge his team’s strength against a top-tier opponent.
For the Westphalians, the match is particularly significant, as it comes on the heels of a series of tough friendly matches. Dortmund faced Christos Tzolis’s Arsenal, winning 3-2, while in their most recent test match, they drew 2-2 with Konstantinos Koulierakis’s Roma. Now, they face Bayern in a match that will allow Kovac to get an even clearer picture of his team’s match readiness.
The spotlight is also on Dortmund’s two Greek stars, Konstantinos Karetsas and Giannis Konstantelias. The former has already joined Kovac’s squad and is one of the players drawing the most attention, while the latter has been in his new environment for just a few days, having completed his first training session with the Westphalians.
For Karetsa, the Super Cup is yet another opportunity to show that he can rise to the challenge of a high-level match, having already become more familiar with the Croatian coach’s game plan; according to reports in Germany, the coach will start “Kos” against the Bavarians.
For Konstantelia, on the other hand, the situation is different. “Delias” is still in the early days of his adjustment, getting to know his new teammates and the coaching staff. His inclusion in the roster is a given, but it remains to be seen whether he’ll get playing time from his coach.
