FIFA put an end to the “mystery” surrounding the length of halftime in the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, which will take place on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. As it informed the two federations, halftime will not exceed 17 minutes—just two minutes longer than usual.
Of those, 11 minutes will be filled by musical performances by Shakira, Madonna, and Justin Bieber—much less than had initially been leaked, as there were reports that the show would last more than half an hour. FIFA made it clear that the duration will remain short, while the remaining 6 minutes will be used for setting up and taking down the stage, as well as for watering the field —an issue that had been of particular concern to Spain, since the turf at MetLife has appeared dry and slower in previous matches.
The two water breaks remain unchanged, as is the case in all World Cup matches due to high temperatures.
