Anthony Taylor announced his decision to retire from refereeing after the conclusion of the World Cup. The 47-year-old English referee concluded a career spanning more than two decades, having officiated a total of 831 matches.
Taylor officiated Premier League matches for 16 seasons, with 432 appearances at the top level of English soccer, while the highlight of his career was the 2024 Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid.
The final match of his career was the Spain – Portugal (1-0) in the World Cup Round of 16, with Mikel Merino deciding the match in stoppage time.
“Refereeing at the highest level was a tremendous privilege, but the pressure is intense and the criticism is constant. The time has come for me to step away and look toward the next chapter of my career,” Taylor said in his statement.
The English referee also officiated at two World Cups (2022 and 2026), as well as at the 2020 and 2024 Euros, leaving his mark as one of the most important referees of his generation.
