The end of an era in the NBA! On Wednesday night (August 12) Russell Westbrook decided to bring his immense and illustrious career on the magical NBA courts to a close and retire from active play!
The 37-year-old American guard posted a touching video on social media in which he announced his final decision to leave basketball after an 18-year magical run in the world’s top league.
“Russ,” who was loved by fans as few other NBA athletes have been, was one of those players whose talent and explosiveness changed the face of the league and played a major role in propelling its popularity across the globe.
Westbrook is retiring from basketball with one MVP award (2017), having been a 9-time All-Star and selected to the All-NBA Team just as many times. In fact, he is the player with the most triple-doubles in NBA history, with a total of 209!
Since 2008, when he was selected fourth overall in the draft, Westbrook has played successively for the Thunder, Rockets, Wizards, the Lakers, the Clippers, the Nuggets, and the Kings, racking up a total of 1,301 regular-season games with 20.9 points, 8 assists, and 6.9 rebounds.
