The canoe-kayak events will kick off on Friday, August 21, marking the start of the Cypriot delegation’s competition schedule at the 20th Mediterranean Games, which will be held in Taranto from August 21 through September 3.
Four Cypriot athletes will enter the fray on the very first day of the Games, as they will compete in the qualifying rounds of their events, which will take place on Friday morning, before the opening ceremony.
The canoe-kayak team consists of Antonis Kyriakou, Daniel Sirotin, Savia Kyriaki Hatzicharalambous, and Panagia Evangelou, who will compete in the kayak events.
The competitions will take place at the SWAM military base facilities, at the Cimino Par Mar Piccolo center, and the competition schedule will run from August 21–23, with the preliminaries on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday, and the finals on Sunday.
For the four Cypriot athletes, the primary goal is to qualify for the finals in their respective events and then achieve the best possible finish.
Friday’s Schedule
Competition begins at 10:00 a.m. (Cyprus time) with the Men’s Kayak Double 500m, where Antonis Kyriakou and Daniel Sirotin will compete in the first qualifying heat. A total of 14 crews are participating in the event, divided into two qualifying heats. The Cypriot team will face six opponents in its heat. The top three finishers in each heat will advance directly to Sunday’s final, while the rest will have a second chance in Saturday’s semifinal.
At 10:35 a.m., the two qualifying heats for the Women’s Kayak Single 500m will take place, with Savia Kyriaki Hatzicharalambous competing in the first heat and Panagia Evangelou in the second. There are a total of 16 competitors in the event. The top three finishers in each heat advance directly to Sunday’s final, while the athletes finishing in positions 4 through 7 will move on to Saturday’s semifinal.
At 11:00 a.m., the Men’s Kayak Single 1000m heats will follow, with Antonis Kyriakou in the first heat and Daniel Sirotin in the second. In the
event will feature three qualifying heats, with a total of 21 competitors. The winner of each heat secures a direct spot in the final. The athletes who finish in 2nd and 3rd place will advance to the semifinals, while the rest will compete in the placement races as outlined by the competition format.
