Martínez leaves Aston Villa having established himself in recent years as one of the top goalkeepers in world soccer. He made a total of 256 appearances for the club, and last season he made 44 appearances across all competitions.
“I’m thrilled to be at this club. Coming to Chelsea was an easy decision for me and my family, and I can’t wait to get started,” he said in his first remarks.
The Argentine international also made it clear that his goal is to win titles with his new team.
“I want to succeed here. I’m someone who wants to win at everything I do, and I want to bring that mindset to a club that’s used to winning trophies. I play with passion and with my heart, and I’ll give 100% in every game and every practice,” he emphasized.
Martínez’s career in England began at Arsenal, where he was signed in 2010 at the age of 17 from the Independiente youth academy. Several loan spells followed, until he earned his chances with the “Gunners” and started in the final of the 2019–20 season, winning the FA Cup.
In September 2020, he transferred to Aston Villa, where he has become one of the team’s most important players.
His successes with the Argentine national team have been even greater. Since his debut in 2021, he has made 67 appearances, winning two Copa América titles—in 2021 and 2024—as well as the 2022 World Cup.
His performances at the club and international levels have also earned him two consecutive Yashin Awards, in 2023 and 2024, as the world’s top goalkeeper.
