Tsitsipas, back to his old self, defeated Fiss for the first time and advanced to the second round of the US Open

Advancement to the next round

Stefanos Tsitsipas put on one of his strongest performances in recent years in New York, turning around a match that seemed all but lost against Arthur Fiss and securing a victory that feels like a statement. Trailing 4-6, 2-5, the Greek champion turned the match completely around, prevailed 3-1 in sets, and entered the US Open on a roll.

This victory was significant for more than just the match itself. It was the first time Tsitsipas had managed to defeat Fiss in six total meetings, against a player who is in excellent form and had just won the Cincinnati Masters a few days earlier. The Frenchman has climbed to No. 11 in the world and looks ready for the Top 10, but in New York he faced a Stefanos determined not to let the match slip away.

The match began with intensity and chances for both players, but Fish was the one who took the first set, capitalizing on a rough patch for Tsitsipas. In the second set, Stefanos found himself with his back against the wall once again, but the crucial game at 1-3 changed everything. From that point on, the Greek tennis player dramatically stepped up his performance, evened the match, and took the set in a tiebreak with clear dominance.

With the momentum now on his side, Tsitsipas dominated the third set (6-1) and entered the fourth with the same intensity, immediately breaking serve. Fiss tried to fight back, but Stefanos was in control; he regained the lead and closed out the match 6-4 after three hours of high-level tennis.

This victory advances him to the second round of the US Open and moves him up to the No. 10 seed in the draw—the position Fisch held before the match. His next opponent will be Lloyd Harris, who came through the qualifiers, in their first-ever meeting. If he advances, he will face either Lehetska or Samuel.

Tsitsipas is aiming for his first Grand Slam third-round appearance in two years, since the 2024 French Open. At the US Open, he hasn’t reached that stage since 2021. His performance against Fiss shows that he can do it again.
