Stefanos Tsitsipas has joined the national tennis team’s training camp ahead of their Davis Cup match against Slovakia, which will take place this weekend in Košice.
“I don’t play in the Davis Cup for the money or for material things; I feel a bit like a volunteer here. It’s amazing to do something out of pure passion and with all your heart. I’m proud of who I am and where I come from. One day, I want to see Greece in the World Group, among the 16 best teams in the world,” emphasized the 28-year-old tennis player.
He also referred to the loss to Slovakia in Athens in 2023: “For the Slovaks, it’s not a rematch, but for us, it certainly is. This time, we want to change the outcome. What happened in Athens wasn’t easy to swallow. We came here with the goal of qualifying, and I believe that in the coming years we’ll reach much bigger tournaments.”
The match will be held at the NTC Kosice on outdoor clay courts, with Greece vying for one of the most important Davis Cup qualifications in recent years. On Saturday (September 19), the schedule will begin (1:00 p.m. Greek time) with the first two singles matches, while on Sunday (11:00 a.m.), the doubles match will follow, and, if necessary, the final two singles matches. The two countries have met once before in Davis Cup history, in 2023 in Athens (Panathenaic Stadium), when Slovakia emerged victorious with a 3-1 win.
