Petros Christodoulidis competed on Friday (September 11) Petros Christodoulides, just a few days after winning the silver medal at the 20th Mediterranean Games “Taranto 2026.”
The 21-year-old Cypriot judoka competed in the -66kg division and faced Brazilian Chrystian Silva in the first round, to whom he lost, thus ending his run in the tournament. Giorgos Balarjisvili also competed in the same weight class but was eliminated in the first round by the Hungarian Bence Pongracz.
Christodoulidis returned to competition following his strong performance at the Mediterranean Games. The silver medal at the Mediterranean Games was yet another significant achievement in 2026, a year in which he also won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games, while finishing 5th at the Tbilisi Grand Slam and 7th at the Grand Prix Upper Austria.
His consistent performance at international competitions in 2026 has propelled him to No. 27 in the world rankings for the -66kg division. Petros Christodoulides’ next competition is the World Championships, which will take place in early October in Baku, Azerbaijan.
A Win for Sofia
In the women’s -52kg division, Sofia Asvestas started with a victory over Bulgaria’s Gabriela Dimitrova, advancing to the next round. There, she faced Tereza Bodnarova of the Czech Republic, to whom she lost, bringing her run at the Hungary Grand Slam to an end.
Cyprus’s participation in Budapest continues this weekend. On Saturday (September 12), Odysseas Georgakis will compete in the -81kg division, while on Sunday (September 13), Giorgos Kroussaniotakis will compete in the -100kg division, Yiannis Antoniou in the +100kg division, and Zanet Michailidou in the -78kg division.
The Hungary Grand Slam concludes on Sunday (September 13), with 506 male and female athletes from 68 countries participating.
