Atlético won the big Madrid derby, defeating Real 2-1 at the “Metropolitano” and celebrating a significant victory over their city rivals in LaLiga’s 7th matchday! Following this result, the “Roji-Blancos” overtook the “Queen” in the standings and left her six points behind league-leading Barcelona!
Diego Simeone’s team dominated for most of the match and had the best chances in the first half, but failed to find the back of the net. Real Madrid tried to create danger mainly through Vinícius, but went into halftime tied 0-0.
The second half, however, got off to the worst possible start for “La Reina.” In the 50th minute, Dean Housen brought down Giuliano Simeone inside the box and was initially shown a yellow card. After a VAR review, the referee reversed his decision, showed the Real Madrid center back a straight red card, and awarded a penalty kick to Atlético.
Alejandro Grimaldo stepped up to take the penalty in the 53rd minute and sent the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead, giving the home team the advantage and a numerical edge.
Atlético immediately capitalized on the situation and made it 2-0 in the 59th minute. Simeone found Jonathan David with a superb pass inside the box, and the Canadian forward finished beautifully, sending the ball into the top corner.
Even though they were down to ten men, Real Madrid didn’t give up. Thibaut Courtois kept his team in the game with key saves, and in stoppage time, José Mourinho’s squad managed to get back into the match and turn it into a… thriller.
Specifically, Bernardo Silva took a free kick, and Antonio Rüdiger outjumped everyone in the air, scoring with a header to make it 2-1 in the 90th minute. The “Queen” tried to find the equalizer in the remaining minutes of stoppage time, but Atlético held on and secured the big win until the very end.
