With the national emblem on their chests and determined to represent Cyprus with pride, the Men’s National Handball Team is ready to begin its competitive campaign at the 20th Mediterranean Games “Taranto 2026.”
The presence of Cypriot handball at this major event is a special honor and a significant milestone for the sport in our country. The Men’s National Team is participating in the event for the first time, having the opportunity to test its strength against strong national teams and represent Cyprus at a high level.
Our national team, which is in Group B, begins its campaign on Sunday (August 23) at 4:00 p.m. against Algeria. The second match is scheduled for Tuesday (August 25 – 4:00 p.m.) against Tunisia, while the group stage concludes on Thursday (August 27 – 12:00 p.m.) against Greece.
After the group stage, the top two teams from each group will compete for medals, and the other two will compete for 5th–8th place in the classification matches to be held on August 29 and August 31. Group A consists of host Italy, Egypt, Portugal, and Kosovo.
The Cypriot handball team has already made an appearance at the opening ceremony of the Mediterranean Games, which took place on Friday (August 21), with the captain of our national team, Ioulis Argyrou, serving as the flag-bearer alongside shooter Konstantina Nikolaou. It was a special honor to hold the Cypriot flag high and represent our country at a momentous occasion for Cypriot sports.
The Cyprus national team delegation for the event consists of the President of the Cyprus Handball Federation, Konstantinos Filaretou, EHF Delegate Kyriakos Kaplanis, Coach Andreas Andreou, Team Manager Giorgos Peiraias, and Physical Therapist Efthymios Karapetsas.
The playing squad consists of captain Ioulios Argyrou, as well as Andreas Papalambrianou, Charalambos Antoniou, Christoforos Hatzipetrou, Loukas Paraskevas, Anastasios Ioannou, Alexandros Charalambous, Fotis Misailidis, Nikolas Karkalatos, Ioannis Kritikos, Kostas Bakatselos, Theodoros Markidis, Markos Karagiorgis, Marios Georgiadis, Theocharis Spyrou, and Theodoros Panaretou.
