Starring the Moroccan, Bilal El Kanoos, who opened the scoring with a superb individual effort—all on his own—Stuttgart kicked off some great teamwork that led to the second goal, Stuttgart kicked off the league season with a 4-1 win over Cologne.
The Swabians came out strong and, within five minutes, had two very good chances to open the scoring. In the 15th minute, following a cross from Mittelstadt, Pečinović hit the crossbar with a header. Five minutes later, Denis Udav was unable to beat Schwebe with a shot, while on the counterattack, Peicinović was unable to pass the ball to a teammate. Finally, in the 39th minute, El Kanous took matters into his own hands with an excellent slalom run; after first dribbling past two opponents and then Lokošvili at his feet, entered the box and, with a crisp shot, opened the scoring for Stuttgart, giving them the lead.
At the start of the second half, the match opened up, with Cologne looking to equalize. The 19-year-old Moore, who came on as a substitute at the start of the second half, threatened Brentlof twice, with the home team’s goalkeeper making an outstanding save on the second attempt. Ultimately, the Swabians extended their lead following a beautiful combination between El Kanous, and Mittelstadt, with the latter cutting the ball back to the penalty spot, where Promel finished with his left foot to make it 2-0 just past the one-hour mark. In the 75th minute, Demirovic sealed the victory with a solo goal, breaking free on the right along the touchline and cutting into the box from an angle before firing a beautiful right-footed shot to make it 3–0.
In the 81st minute, the “Goats” cut the deficit when Biltter tapped the ball into the net from close range, though Hendriks was credited with an own goal following a cross from Moore. In the 90+1st minute, Wagner, with a right-footed “thunderbolt” from outside the box, following a clearance by the defense, put the triumphant finishing touch on Stuttgart’s victory to make it 4-1.
