Despite the “upheaval” caused in Portugal by Cristiano Ronaldo’s withdrawal from the national team, the Portuguese beat Denmark 4-2 in the Nations League. Jorge Jesus, who has been “blamed” for CR7’s decision to leave the national team, believes that what happened has not divided the squad internally.
“I have a team that believes in the coach’s ideas. They believe in my ideas, and because they possess great individual talent, things become easier. If that means I have the team under control, then yes, I do, because they’re moving forward with me and my ideas,” he said.
“I don’t have trouble focusing. Do you know what’s hard for me? Not understanding what’s going on within the team. Not knowing how to coach my players. Those are the difficult things for me. The rest… nothing. What matters is what we need to do. Whatever is happening isn’t dividing the team. It hasn’t divided us, and it won’t divide us,” he added.
When asked if he feels the country is on his side regarding the Ronaldo issue, Jesus admitted he wasn’t sure, but made it clear that he wants to earn that support: “I don’t know if the country is on my side. I don’t know, but I’d like that to be the case,” he said.
