João Mário’s return to Nea Filadelfia became a reality on Wednesday night (September 2), as AEK announced the signing of the Portuguese star, who had left Besiktas as a free agent.
The 33-year-old attacking midfielder, who last season made 31 appearances with three goals and two assists across all competitions for AEK, spoke to the official website of the “yellow-and-blacks” about his return to the club, expressing his determination to win this year’s league title as well.
He also mentioned the “golden” goal he scored against Panathinaikos in stoppage time to give AEK a 2-1 victory in last season’s playoffs—a goal that “sealed” the league title.
Here’s what he said in detail:
“I feel amazing. It’s like coming home—to a place where I felt really good last season—so I’m very happy to be back here. This club, this team, played a very important role in my career, so I’m very happy.
I want us to become champions again with AEK. I think we did an amazing job last season, so I believe the team’s main goal should be to win the Greek league title again. I also hope we’ll have a very strong run in the Champions League because it’s important for the club’s image, and I believe we have the ideal team to make it happen.
It’s crazy! Even in Portugal, everyone saw that goal, and everyone was talking about it with me all summer long. So I don’t think I’ll ever forget that goal, and I hope it’s my first big moment with AEK.”
