Russian President Vladimir Putin warned today that any deployment of European troops in Ukraine would amount to “war against Russia,” while noting that Moscow is not “threatening” European countries.
“Right now, they (i.e., European leaders) are saying they are considering how to send troops onto Ukrainian territory. That means war against Russia,” Mr. Putin said, according to Russian news agencies.

“We are not threatening, nor do we intend to threaten, European countries. Why would we do that? No one even realizes that we have no reason to clash with Europe,” he added from New Delhi, where he is attending the BRICS summit.
Putin stated that European leaders “are terrorizing their own people with a fictional threat from Russia,” emphasizing that “this threat does not exist and never has.”
Russia has always considered the deployment of Western troops to Ukraine a red line that must not be crossed. This idea has been discussed for many years by European leaders, but it has never taken concrete form.
