The Police are announcing a Cyprus-wide awareness and enforcement campaign, involving roadside checks to combat hands-free driving (using a cell phone or other object while driving), as this violation is a major contributing factor to fatal and serious traffic accidents.
The campaign will begin tomorrow, Monday, August 24, 2026, and will run through Sunday, August 30, 2026. Throughout the campaign, members of the Traffic Police will place special emphasis on addressing the use of cell phones or other objects while driving, while also educating the public about the serious dangers posed by driving without hands-free use.
Driver distraction is among the most significant factors that increase the likelihood of being involved in a traffic collision, as it significantly reduces reaction time, and driving while using a cell phone also plays a decisive role.
According to data from the three-year period 2023–2025, distracted driving was the leading cause of serious and fatal traffic injuries, accounting for 22.1% of traffic fatalities and 29.4% of serious traffic injuries recorded during this period.
