DISY President Annita Dimitriou announced the appointment of Paris Markou as Special Advisor on Defense Diplomacy and Missing Persons.
Ms. Dimitriou made special mention of the multifaceted experience of Brigadier General (ret.) Markou, who served his country with consistency and dedication throughout his military career, possessing in-depth knowledge of issues related to defense and security.
The President of DISY thanked Mr. Markou for his campaign as an independent candidate with the Democratic Rally and, at the same time, praised the particular sensitivity and enduring interest he has shown in the issue of the Missing, emphasizing that he has excellent knowledge and personal experience of the complexities surrounding this extremely sensitive humanitarian issue.
“With a sense of responsibility and respect toward the families of our missing persons, we will continue to work diligently to determine the fate of every compatriot of ours who has remained missing for more than half a century, guided by our duty to our homeland and to the people who continue to await answers about their loved ones,” noted the DISY President.

For his part, Mr. Markou thanked the President for her trust and emphasized that defense diplomacy will always play a prominent role in foreign policy, especially for countries like Cyprus, centered on international multilateral cooperation to maintain regional security.
On the other hand, as he noted, the issue of the Missing Persons is, for him, one of the most sensitive and deeply human aspects of the Cyprus problem.
“It is a constant reminder of our debt to history, but above all to the relatives of the missing persons, who continue to live with unanswered questions. I know firsthand the pain and the need for justice. Time is running out and working against our efforts, a fact that makes the need for coordinated and meaningful action even more urgent. “I will work with consistency, sensitivity, and the same zeal to contribute to the collective effort to keep this issue high on the agenda and to support the families of the missing,” he concluded.
