In one of the most dramatic moments of this year’s World Cup, Sébastien Desambre’s press conference following the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s elimination by England was overshadowed by tragic news.
Following the 2-1 loss in the round of 32, the African team’s head coach faced the press to comment on his team’s performance. Before the press conference concluded, the team’s press officer took the floor and announced that the French coach’s father had passed away, publicly expressing his condolences to him.
Desabre, visibly shaken, simply said a brief “Merci” (“Thank you”) and left the room without continuing the press conference. It remains unclear, however, whether he had been informed earlier of his father’s passing or whether he learned of the news at that very moment.
