For some, the new era of Cypriot television never actually arrived…
“It involved complaints from specific companies from which consumers had purchased certain set-top boxes, installed them in their homes, and then an explosion occurred— that spark that was mentioned, and then the devices stopped working.”
Virginia Christou – Legal Advisor to the Consumers’ Association
At the same time, complaints have also been made regarding overheating of these devices, as well as the outlet.
“If you touch it, it burns; it gives off heat… €400 just to connect two TVs. In the end, it’s not worth it for me to call a technician to install a set-top box. I’d rather just buy a cheap 32-inch TV for €100–€200.”

As if that weren’t enough, consumers—and especially the elderly—are being forced to spend a significant amount of money just to be able to watch TV. In fact, technicians appear to be making substantial profits following this change, without issuing receipts.
“We have a case involving an elderly woman who has two televisions in her home; she was charged €90 for each of her two televisions, just so the technician could bring her the set-top box and set up her channels.”

Alpha has created a special artificial intelligence tool where, in just a few simple steps, you can check if your TV is compatible with DVB-T2 technology.
You can find it here.
Phone lines were “overwhelmed”
At the same time, the phone lines at the citizen service center were “swamped” with calls regarding potential issues.
“The call center was flooded with 1,600 calls on the first day; they answered about 1,100 of them. On the second day, we received around 1,100 calls and answered about 90% of them.”
Andronikos Kakouras – Deputy Director of the Electronic Communications Department

For certain TV brands, the broadcast country must be changed for the TV to work. In other cases, however, the problem is due to the antenna and the internal wiring.
In any case, as we were informed, as of 6:00 p.m., we had not yet received a callback.
