Although she made a very long first jump of 6.60 m (+2.3 m/s) (6.52 m on her second attempt, 6.33 m on her third attempt), Filippa Fotopoulou was nevertheless unable to secure a spot in the long jump final at the 27th European Championships in Birmingham.
The athlete, coached by Kyriakos Antoniou, was very unlucky this afternoon, August 15, 2026, as she finished 13th overall across the two qualifying groups and, for the first time, missed the final at a European Championships by just one point.
However, under the new regulations of the European Federation, the 13th- and 14th-place athletes are considered alternates for tomorrow’s final; they must go through the warm-up as usual and will be notified if they ultimately get to compete in the final.
Early reports suggest that Sweden’s Aila Halberg Hossain is facing an issue; if she is unable to overcome it, Filippa Fotopoulou will be competing in her third consecutive final.
