European Commission: There is no immediate concern regarding natural gas supplies for the winter

Fuel oil inventories currently stand at nearly 62%

Natural gas storage facilities in the EU are currently at about 62% capacity, with the European Commission estimating that the filling process is proceeding satisfactorily, despite the slower pace compared to previous years, and it assures that there is no immediate cause for concern regarding security of supply ahead of next winter.

“The pace is a bit slower than in previous years, but in reality, things are going well,” said the Commission’s spokesperson for energy, Eva Hrdčirová, during a press briefing in Brussels on Thursday.

As she noted, storage levels currently stand at “very close to 62%,” while the Commission continues to work with member states to reach the appropriate level before the start of the heating season.

She clarified that the goal is not to fill storage facilities to capacity, since, as she explained, approximately 80% of their total capacity is typically utilized. Based on this target, the current fill level represents a significant portion of the desired level. “There is no immediate concern regarding the security of natural gas supply in the EU ahead of next winter,” Hrdčirová emphasized.

Referring to the exceptionally high temperatures that prevailed in Europe, she noted that the heat waves have put pressure on the European electricity grid, though they have not yet caused any problems for energy security.

Regarding the impact of the crisis and the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, the spokesperson described the environment as “highly volatile,” noting, however, that at this stage, “the situation is stable and there is no risk” to security of supply.

The next meeting of the EU Gas Coordination Group is scheduled for September. Hrncírová stated that the Commission is prepared to convene an emergency meeting should any issues arise, clarifying that “nothing of the sort is happening at this stage.”

When asked about the EU’s main natural gas suppliers, the spokesperson noted that the primary sources of supply are currently Norway and the United States, with imports from Norway being slightly higher than those from the U.S., though she did not provide details on specific companies. “We are well on track to ensure the supply of natural gas for the winter,” he concluded.
