A heated confrontation, set against the backdrop of the process to elect a new EDEK president, erupted on the “Alpha Summer” show between Marios Hannides and Savvas Iliophotos, with accusations of ageism and ambiguous public statements.
Mr. Hannides explained the reasons why he decided today to withdraw his candidacy and support Koullis Mavronikolas’s bid to secure the Democratic Movement’sDemocrats. He specifically mentioned Mr. Iliophotos, who, through social media, has come out in support of Sophia Christodoulou’s candidacy, wondering why he himself sought an appointment to the Advisory Council.
Speaking on the program, the former mayor of Strovolos called on Mr. Hannides to retract his statements and noted that Sofia Christodoulou’s candidacy could rally experiencedEDEK members to support her work.
At the same time, Nikos Nikolaidis asked for clarification that he had never joined the ranks of the Democratic Alarm, as stated by Mr. Hannides, who emphasized that he had supported Averof Neophytou’s candidacy in the 2023 presidential election.
