Several people were killed and others were injured on Thursday in a traffic accident involving a tour bus carrying Dutch tourists in eastern Switzerland, local police announced, though they declined to provide a more precise toll while the victims’ families had not yet been notified.
The accident occurred between the towns of Sus and Chernetz, in the canton of Grisons, on the eastern edge of the country.
The Dutch Association of Travel Agents (ANVR) told the French Press Agency that the tour bus belonged to the travel company Oad and was carrying 48 passengers, all of whom were Dutch.
“Several people lost their lives in the bus accident (…) Several others were also injured,” the cantonal police announced on platform X, without providing details about the circumstances of the accident.
According to the ANVR, the passengers on the tour bus were part of an organized tour. They had departed from the Netherlands on Monday and were on a one-day excursion to Switzerland, traveling from Austria.
“We are deeply saddened by what has happened. This is a terrible accident,” the ANVR spokesperson told the news website Blick.
Footage broadcast by local media shows rescuers working frantically around the bus, which had overturned on the side of the road. Helicopters had landed a short distance away. Police confirmed that “several rescue teams” had been mobilized.
Chernets is the gateway to Switzerland’s National Park, a large Alpine region covering approximately 170 square kilometers with a network of trails stretching over 100 kilometers in the Engadin Alpine valley.
