The crew is safe; no reports of pollution

Another attack on a tanker was reported in the early hours of Saturday, October 3, this time extremely close to the coast of Oman.

According to the captain’s initial report to the UKMTO, the crude tanker was struck by an unknown projectile while it was approximately four nautical miles east of the coast.

All crew members are safe, and so far there have been no reports of marine pollution. The ship’s identity, flag, and operating company had not been disclosed at the time of the initial report. The origin of the projectile and the party responsible for the attack also remain unknown.

The location of the incident is particularly significant, as it is outside the Strait of Hormuz and on a key maritime route for oil shipments from the Persian Gulf.

This latest attack follows a series of incidents in recent days, as shipowners and charterers weigh the return of more tankers to the region. The extremely high freight rates are a strong economic incentive, but the deteriorating security situation could halt this trend.

Attention is now turning to insurers as well. Maintaining high war risk premiums, combined with the limited availability of willing tonnage, may keep transportation costs and tanker freight rates at extreme levels.

The attack off the coast of Oman simultaneously expands the geographic scope of the recent attacks, shifting the pressure to sea lanes outside the Strait.
