The Theater Reading Marathon, titled “Every Reading, a World Awakening,” aims to serve as a vibrant space for encounter and dialogue among young playwrights, theater professionals, and the audience, providing a platform for new stories, diverse perspectives, and contemporary issues. Twelve new voices in contemporary playwriting, across four evenings dedicated to new Cypriot theater.
On October 30, November 13 and 20, and December 4, twelve original plays will be heard for the first time in readings by professional actors from THOK, curated by Neoklis Neokleous.
This event marks the culmination of the long-running playwriting workshop [It’s Not Just] Words on Paper, under the dramaturgical guidance of the late Alexia Papalazarou in 2024–2025, with contributions from writer Michalis Papadopoulos and general curation by Marina Maleni.
Alexia Papalazarou was a significant figure in Cypriot theater, making a substantial contribution to theatrical creation and the promotion of new voices. With her sensitivity, knowledge, and dedication, she supported young artists and encouraged them to seek their own theatrical voice. The Theater Reading Marathon is, in its own way, a continuation of this invaluable legacy.
Fifteen young playwrights participated in the workshop, taking their first steps in playwriting. Through a creative process that lasted several months, twelve original plays were born, which are now making the leap from the page to the stage, meeting the audience for the first time.
Each performance will be followed by a brief discussion with the playwright, offering the audience the opportunity to meet the creators, discover the origins of their works, and gain insight into the process of playwriting.
