The Sixers suffered their first loss of the NBA season, falling 106-93 to the Pistons, with LeBron James forced to play center for long stretches due to the absence of Joel Embiid, as well as Dominic Barlow and Tacko Fall.
“"Damn, we have an MVP (ed. note: he means Embiid). I’m not here to have a permanent role at center. You’ve got Joel on the team, right? So, I don’t see it as a role that can be sustained on a permanent basis, but it’s an option we know we can utilize if necessary,” said the 41-year-old superstar.
“I know I can play all positions, from 1 to 5, both on offense and defense, if necessary. But having a permanent role as a center… I don’t think that’s the case. If I were to say that I signed here to have a permanent role as a center, I don’t think that was ever the intention,” he added.
The “King” had 18 points, 5 assists, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals in the game. It remains to be seen whether Nick Nurse and the Sixers will consider using James as a center again in the near future.
James will turn 42 in December, and the Sixers recognize the need to prioritize the superstar’s health, so he can stay fresh and ready through next season.
The Sixers will look to get back on the winning track in their next game, on Wednesday, against the Indiana Pacers.
