The young Cypriot composer and singer-songwriter presents his new song and music video titled “Love with Chemicals.” Through lyrics and music he wrote himself, he tells a very personal story about the experience of cancer through the eyes of the person standing by the side of the one who is ill.
Inspired by the health ordeal his partner recently went through, the song sheds light on an often-overlooked aspect of the disease: what the person standing by the patient’s side experiences. The fear, the anxiety, the silences, the small glimmers of hope, but also the need to stay strong for your loved one, even when you’re afraid inside.
“Love with Chemicals” was born out of this reality, highlighting love not as a promise that everything will always be easy, but as the decision to remain present when life gets tough. To hold your partner’s hand, share their burden, and seek the light together, even in the darkest moments.
With his new song, Nearchos transforms a deeply personal experience into a story with which many people can identify: those who have faced a serious illness, but also those who have stood by a loved one, learning that strength doesn’t mean the absence of fear, but the choice to love and stand by them, despite the fear.
The line “but come on, I just smile” is perhaps the heart of the song. For those moments when you feel you can’t do anything meaningful to help your loved one, other than smiling to give them strength, while deep down you’re more afraid than you can admit. At the same time, it’s a song about a world that often leaves us no room to be afraid, to break down, to mourn what we’ve lost, or simply to say, “I’m not okay.” And so we smile. Not because everything is fine, but because we have to keep going.
In the end, it comes down to “all’s well that ends well—I’m celebrating my victory with antidepressants.” Because even though the battle may be over and you’re celebrating the long-awaited victory, that doesn’t mean you emerge unscathed from this experience. Scars remain that may not be visible, but you continue to carry them with you. This is also a harsh reality for many young people.
“Love with Chemicals” is dedicated to his partner, Eleni, whom he admires so much, as well as to his three uncles who passed away prematurely from cancer.
