“Bombshell” from Haris Georgiadis: I will not participate in the election campaign if the DISY candidate is Averof

The letter he sent to anita dimitriou, verbatim
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Haris Georgiadis is positioning himself outside the election campaign for the Democratic Alarm’s candidacy, should Averof Neophytou be the nominee.

In a letter sent to DISY President Annita Dimitriou, Mr. Georgiadis informs her of his intention, explaining the reasons behind his decision.

The letter reads as follows:

President of the Democratic Rally

Ms. Anita Dimitriou

Dear Chairwoman,

I would like to inform you that, for the first time, I will not be able to participate in the campaign to support our party’s candidate in the 2028 presidential election, should that candidate be Mr. Averof Neophytou.

I understand the circumstances under which you made your decision not to seek the nomination. I hope, however, that you, too, will understand that I could never, as a matter of principle, accept a fait accompli that I believe was shaped under conditions of pressure and overt political blackmail. I am, of course, referring to the possibility of an independent candidacy, which remained an option for Mr. Neophytou until the very last moment. The reference in the party’s October 12 statement that your decision to withdraw “ensured everyone’s participation in democratic processes” fully confirms this assessment.

It is truly regrettable that, instead of a level-headed political process through which the party’s strategy would be formulated and its options evaluated, it appears that tactical maneuvering, backroom dealings, and unbridled ambition prevailed. This is a development that is inconsistent with the principles, values, practices, and political tradition of the Democratic Alarm.

Furthermore, we are faced with the possibility that the party’s candidate will be someone who now holds views—on most issues— positions that fundamentally diverge from the time-tested positions of the Democratic Alarm. This specific issue has repeatedly come to the fore in recent years and has resurfaced very recently, in a way that undermines the Democratic Alarm’s efforts to function as a serious and cohesive political force within the modern center-right.

I therefore consider it my political duty to distance myself from Mr. Neophytou’s candidacy, should it be the choice of the majority.

I want to make it clear that my objections have nothing to do with Mr. Neophytou’s eligibility. My decisions have never been determined solely by assessments of electoral success or failure. Moreover, in the 2023 presidential election, when the political circumstances surrounding the candidacy of the party’s then-chairman were very different, I offered my full support, despite the unfavorable assessments at the time regarding his electability.

I also wish to emphasize that my current position in no way constitutes a distancing of myself from the Democratic Alarm party. On the contrary, I continue to firmly believe that it remains the cornerstone of our country’s security, stability, and progress. However, in order to facilitate any potential proceedings and decisions on your part, I hereby submit my resignation from the highly honorary position of president of the Glafkos Clerides Institute.

Since passivity or pretense could never be options for me, I consider it my duty to inform you of my decision in a timely manner, even before the election process is completed.

In the same vein and for the sake of transparency, I am informing you that this letter will be made public.

Sincerely,

Haris Georgiadis
