Cabinet: The three changes it approved regarding student grants

Everything beneficiaries need to know
ALPHANEWSLIVE

On Tuesday, the Cabinet approved an expenditure of €11.5 million for the purpose of providing student grants for the 2025–2026 academic year.

According to statements by Finance Minister Makis Keravnos following the Council’s session, this expenditure represents an increase compared to the €10 million that had been budgeted for 2025.

Mr. Keravnos added that, in a second decision, the Council of Ministers approved the allocation of €1.2 million—an increase of €200,000— for student allowances to families of Greek students studying in Cyprus and to repatriated families of Cypriot students studying in Cyprus or abroad.

As he explained, the allowance covers families who, due to their residence abroad, are not eligible for the regular student grant, which exceeds €30 million.

The Minister of Finance added that, with the above decisions, the maximum family income threshold is increased by €5,000, from €39,000 to €44,000, for families with two dependent children, while for families with more children, the threshold starts at €64,000 and also increases by €5,000 for each additional child, and all income and asset criteria are also being eliminated for families with more than five children.

He added that, due to the energy crisis, the airfare allowance for students is being increased from €300 to €500 and covers living expenses, food, and airfare, while an additional allowance of 500 euros is also provided for first-year students.

“Today’s decision clearly reflects the Christodoulides government’s steadfast priority of implementing targeted measures that reach those who truly need them,” said Mr. Keravnos.

In this context, he noted, “The Ministry of Finance deemed it necessary to adjust the income thresholds so that the inflationary pressures of recent years do not leave families with genuine needs without support.”

“We will continue to ensure that economic growth translates into real support for every family in need, with prudence and respect for the stability of public finances,” Mr. Keravnos assured.

When asked about the rationale behind the adjustment of the amounts, the Minister noted that this year’s adjustment has taken into account the difficulties of daily life caused by the energy crisis and, more broadly, the very challenging geopolitical environment affecting both students and households and businesses alike.

Furthermore, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Finance’s Grants and Benefits Service, applications from interested parties will be submitted exclusively online, via the Service’s electronic platform (https://sg-yxe.mof.gov.cy), which will open for applications on a date to be announced.

It should be noted that in order to submit an application, parents or guardians must have an account with the CY Login e-Service, that is, the personal account through which citizens have secure access to government e-services; those who do not already have a CY Login account can create one at the following link: https://cge.cyprus.gov.cy/cyloginregistration/register.

Please note that Cypriot repatriate applicants must also verify their account via e-banking, via video call or by visiting a Citizen Service Center with their ID (instructions at https://cge.cyprus.gov.cy/cyloginregistration/knowledgebase/help/identification), while applicants residing in Greece are not required to verify their accounts.

“The start date for submitting applications will be announced in the coming days. Families falling into the above categories are urged to create a CY Login account in a timely manner and, where required, to verify it, so they can submit their application as soon as the platform opens,” the announcement concludes. will be announced in the coming days.
